Bexar County promotes 1st woman detention captain

For the first time, the Detention Division of the Bexar County Sheriff's Office in San Antonio has promoted a woman to the rank of captain. Laura Balditt also is the first Hispanic woman to be promoted to this rank in the agency's history.

Collin County sheriff won't seek re-election

Collin County Sheriff Terry G. Box has announced that he won't seek reelection when his current term ends on Dec. 31, 2016. Box has been involved in law enforcement for 47 years — and has served as Collin County's sheriff for 30 years — since 1985.

Border sheriff ends partnership with Crime Stoppers

In an effort to clean up the image of corruption in law enforcement, Hidalgo County Sheriff Eddie Guerra has cut ties with the civilian-run Crime Stoppers program after its integrity continuously came into question. Along the Texas border, the Crime Stoppers program is a partnership that raises funds to pay rewards for anonymous tips that are called in to law enforcement. Guerra said he was separating his department from Crime Stoppers after a thorough review of all of the departments in his office.

Harris County Sheriff Department's 10 most wanted fugitives

Personal traits — such as resilience, satisfaction with life and a grateful disposition — may help shield police officers from symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder in the aftermath of a natural disaster. This is the case even though police officers are repeatedly exposed to traumatic events and those events have been found to provoke PTSD. These are the conclusions of a new University at Buffalo study that examined police officers in the New Orleans area both during and immediately after Hurricane Katrina.

New study: Police officers wearing body cameras 50 percent less likely to use force

A recently published study has found that police equipped with body cameras reduced their use of force by around 50 percent, and complaints by the public against them dropped by almost 90 percent. The startling figures were revealed as part of a research study conducted by the University of Cambridge and was based on a 12-month trial conducted among 1,000 officers in Rialto, California.

A video of a bald and burly Delaware police officer enthusiastically lip-syncing to Taylor Swift's "Shake it Off" is getting global attention. The video, posted to the Dover Police Department's Facebook page, shows Master Cpl. Jeff Davis in uniform, driving a patrol car while lip-syncing to the popular pop song — sassy head rolls and finger-pointing included.
