The Dallas Morning News
A 15-year-old girl was hospitalized Monday morning after a shooting at a school in the Ellis County town of Italy. A 16-year-old boy was taken into custody, the Ellis County Sheriff's Office said. The suspect was a student who left the Italy High building immediately after firing several shots with a .380-caliber handgun in the cafeteria, officials say. Usually 45 to 55 students are in the cafeteria at that time.
Cassie Shook, a 17-year-old junior at the school, told The Associated Press that she was driving up to the building when she saw "the doors fly open and everyone screaming and running out of the building." She said she was angry when she learned who the suspect was because she'd complained about the boy at least twice to school officials, including to a vice principal.

Crime in Houston overall continued to trend downward and fell slightly in 2017, Chief Art Acevedo said recently, as he continued to insist the department is severely understaffed and needs to grow by as many as 2,000 officers. And the chief repeated his criticism of Gov. Greg Abbott and other state officials he said were making it difficult for cities to adequately police and protect themselves by focusing on unnecessary legislation regarding immigration, gender issues and local control.

There is an old saying, "There is a time to talk, and a time to shoot," which is a concept that should be familiar to all police officers. There are also a lot of less lethal options between the two choices. Verbalization when appropriate, can, and should be used, at all levels of force. There is a time and a place for loud, forceful commands. However, using loud, repetitive verbal commands can be more of a hindrance than a help when trying to gain compliance from a resistive subject.
