Recent years have seen increasing antipathy toward the law enforcement community. While there has been justifiable cause for some protests, the departments — on the whole — have been unfairly maligned and targeted. The unacceptable actions of some officers have left the entire police force vulnerable to social, political and violently physical attacks. To aid and protect the men in blue, Congress passed several important pieces of legislation in the last year.

President Donald Trump wasted little time making clear that his administration will take a drastically different approach to criminal justice than his predecessor. Shortly after taking the oath of office as the 45th U.S. president Friday, the White House published six issue statements on its website, including one titled "Standing Up For Our Law Enforcement Community." In it, the Trump White House pledged to be a "law and order administration" while stopping what it characterized as a "dangerous anti-police atmosphere in America."

As a police officer, every call is an opportunity to have your training and your tactics challenged. Yet, call after call, officers respond with both duty and diligence. This does not, however, negate fear on the part of law enforcement professionals. There is a healthy amount of fear that is associated with the career field. That fear, when properly checked, keeps officers light on their feet and aware of the fluidity of the given situation. Leaving nothing to chance, skilled officers are prepared to escalate or de-escalate their tactics as necessary.

Healthy self-awareness means knowing both where we excel and all the ways we fall short. It is our efforts to correct past failings that form the foundations of serious change. Seeing the good in a relationship is extremely important to maintaining positive feelings toward one another, but awareness of problem areas is just as important.
