Sheriff's deputies arrested 40 people in a major bust of an alleged Texas cockfighting ring they say was run by a major cocaine distributor in the area. The bust was made during a raid shortly before noon Jan. 23 on a home south of Midland, according to the Midland Reporter-Telegram.
There, officers recovered 30 live roosters, several dead birds, 46 ounces of cocaine, guns and about $32,000. Also found were rooster cages, as well as sharpened razor blades, or "gaffs," that are tied to roosters' feet to make their fights more brutal.

Before issuing thousands of permits each year for North Carolinians to buy handguns, sheriffs in Mecklenburg, Union and some other counties across the state have gone through an oft-futile exercise. Relying on statutory language allowing them to ensure each gun owner is of "good moral character," they have submitted applicants' names to large health care facilities seeking to learn whether anyone was suicidal or otherwise mentally unfit to own a pistol.

The 911 calls from downtown Dallas began piling up toward the end of 2015. Some would come in as "unconscious person"; others, "welfare check." Some were generic: "medical emergency" or "other."
