Seven Crossroads sheriffs signed a letter this week expressing their support of a group trying to reform rural mental healthcare. The sheriffs of Calhoun, DeWitt, Goliad, Jackson, Lavaca, Refugio and Victoria counties wrote in the letter that the current way people with mental illness in crisis are cared for is unacceptable.
The sheriffs wrote that people with mental illness are often arrested for minor, nonviolent offenses and placed in a system not designed to treat them. They asked that legislators support the group's estimated $11.6 million, four-year plan.

Later this month, federal agents will walk into a windowless, concrete room in the Jackson County jail in East Texas to install a fingerprint machine and a high-speed internet hookup. Once that's done, Jackson County correctional officers will be able to access federal databases to check whether the people they've arrested are undocumented immigrants — and call in the feds if they are.
The Jackson County sheriff applied last year to have his officers cross-designated as federal immigration enforcement officers through a little-known section of the Immigration and Nationality Act law known as 287(g). Late last month, President Donald Trump signed an executive order that aims to revive and beef up the use of 287(g) and give many more local law enforcement agencies the power to act as immigration officers — a controversial move that reflects a larger and ongoing fight over immigration, sanctuary cities and America's southern border.

Though older police vehicles are often transitioned to become administrative or training vehicles once they reach a certain age or mile limit; in many cases it is more cost effective to purchase new vehicles than continue to utilize them past their prime. The older a vehicle is, the more expensive it is to maintain. If not well-managed, such operating costs of old vehicles can become a considerable sink in your budget.
