The Western States Sheriffs' Association is comprised of sheriffs and their command staff from 17 western states that include Texas, Washington, Wyoming, Oregon, Utah, Idaho, California, Arizona, Nevada, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota South Dakota, Colorado, Montana, Oklahoma and Kansas. The association was formed in 1993 in an effort to allow sheriffs to assist each other in fulfilling their duties and obligations related to law enforcement in their respective counties.

Sheriff Gary Painter was born in Amherst, Texas. In 1965, Sheriff Painter graduated from Plainview High School and, in 1966, enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He served two tours of duty in Vietnam. After being honorably discharged in 1970, Sheriff Painter embarked on his law enforcement career by hiring on with the Texas Department of Public Safety as a Highway Patrolman in September 1970 and served tours of duty with the Culberson County SO and Presidio County SO -- where he also earned his Bachelor of Science degree in police administration from Sul Ross State University -- as well as the Midland PD and finally with the Midland County SO in 1982. Working his way up through the ranks, Sheriff Painter ran for and took office as Sheriff of Midland County on Jan. 1, 1985. He is now in his ninth term in office, a span that covers the past 33 years.
Sheriff Painter is a past president of the Sheriffs' Association of Texas (2010-2011) with a lifetime membership. He also serves on the Legislative Committee and Technology Committee. In 2016, Gov. Greg Abbott appointed Sheriff Painter as a commissioner on the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles after serving seven years on the Texas Commission on Jail Standards, having been appointed by former Gov. Rick Perry.

Harris County Sheriff Deputy Roberto Martinez frantically ran from window to window of the Baytown trailer home that was engulfed in flames.
Early Tuesday morning, he eventually found the room in which Eloisa Martinez — no relation — was trapped. He broke through the window with his flashlight, pushed aside a chest of drawers stood in front of the window and helped the 63-year-old woman through the window. Coughing heavily and repeating, "I got you, mama," he carried her — and his 30 pounds of gear — to the safety of the front yard.

Authorities confirm they have recovered the remains of the pilot of a cargo plane carrying Amazon parcels that crashed into a bay near Houston.
The Chambers County Sheriff's Office reported over the weekend that remains recovered last week from Trinity Bay are those of 60-year-old Capt. Ricky Blakely.

A suspect ran into an H-E-B store in Bexar County during a chase Thursday morning and pretended to be an employee to avoid detection, authorities told the Houston Chronicle. According to the newspaper, the chase started as domestic violence call. When deputies responded to the scene of the call, the suspect drove away and a chase ensued.

A bill adopted by the Idaho Senate on Feb. 12 to allow post-traumatic stress disorder benefits for first responders under the state's workers compensation system is drawing on a trend in presumption laws related to mental injuries, but is fairly unique because the proposed legislation includes 911 operators among those who can seek PTSD coverage. Idaho's move is in line with the more than 12 states with laws in the books for first responders who are diagnosed with PTSD, and is in line with the emerging trend of presumption laws that do not require that a mental injury be associated with one event.
