The Tyler County Sheriff's Office is investigating Sunday's fire as a capital murder, Sheriff Bryan Weatherford announced at a news conference Wednesday. Bruce Lee Chance, 37, of Orange, is the primary suspect, Weatherford said. He was arrested Wednesday afternoon, KFDM News has learned.

A North Texas sheriff who acknowledged being involved in a New Year's Day fight has resigned and pleaded guilty to misdemeanor assault. Ellis County Sheriff Johnny Brown quit Wednesday. Brown, in a plea deal, was sentenced to a day in jail and fined $500.

Titus County Sheriff's Department is investigating after three men were killed in what investigators believe were two failed robbery attempts on family members. Sheriff Tim Ingram said deputies were called around 1 a.m. to reports of a shooting in the 1800 block of County Road 3140 in the Cookville area, just north of Mount Pleasant.

The allegations were chilling: A woman claimed as many as 15 members of a fraternity at Stephen F. Austin University had sexually assaulted her in the woods during a fraternity party.
The woman making the accusation offered witnesses, photos and details to back her allegations. But, the Nacogdoches County Sheriff's Office on Monday closed the case, saying there's no reason to believe the woman was sexually assaulted.

Americans spend more than 10 hours a day looking at screens, most of it on the Internet. So it makes sense that our police departments are taking note of the fact and trying to connect with their communities online. One social platform that is helping them do that with success is Nextdoor.com. Operating as a private social network, Nextdoor connects neighbors. It is, however, interesting that the site has evolved to include the local law enforcement departments into their network.

Although many local law enforcement agencies do not require applicants to have a college degree, police departments in larger cities have started mandating that new hires possess an associate's degree, a bachelor's degree or some college coursework. A 2015 Bureau of Justice Statistics report showed that in 2013, 32 percent of police departments required new hires to have some college education, and 23 percent of local law enforcement professionals were employed for agencies that required at least a two-year degree.
