Newly elected Burleson County sheriff
Burleson County Sheriff Dale Stroud will step down and allow newly elected Sheriff Gene Hermes (middle) to be sworn in on Sunday, March 15. That announcement was made at the Monday, March 9, commissioners court meeting. Stroud, who served previously for 12 years as county sheriff, came out of retirement to fill in as interim sheriff after the Oct. 10, 2019, resignation of Thomas Norsworthy.
Sheriff Loren Brand retiring as Carson County Sheriff
Sheriff Lorend Brand is retiring as Carson County sheriff, effective March 31, 2020. He was nice enough to send the following comments to the Sheriffs' Association of Texas:
"I've had the privilege of serving as Sheriff of Carson County from 1992 to 1999 and again from 2013 to the present. My job was made easier by the wonderful advice and resources made available by the Sheriff's Association of Texas.
'My career in law enforcement began in 1973 and given me an opportunity to meet and have ongoing friendships with so many diverse and talented persons in the criminal justice system. But I have the opportunity to pursue new adventures with my family and I certainly look forward to that! Be safe!"
Sheriff Darrel Bobbitt retiring as Houston County Sheriff
Sheriff Darrel Bobbitt of Houston County will be retiring on March 31, after serving over 19 years as sheriff. He was elected sheriff in November 2000 and took office on Jan. 1, 2001. He is the only sheriff in Houston County to hold the office of sheriff for that many consecutive years.
During his tenure, Sheriff Bobbitt has brought structure and organzation to the sheriff's office. When he took office, there were only seven deputies, four dispatchers and around 10 jailers. Currently, there are right at 50 employees in the sheriff's Office. A new law enforcement center was built in 2010.
Sheriff Bobbitt made a huge impact on Houston County with his leadership and friendship extended to many in the county. He will be greatly missed. He is wished well in his retirement and new endeavors.

It's a call no chief of police wants to receive — the call that reveals an officer has been killed in the line of duty. In an ideal world, the answer to the headline of this article would be "no, we are not prepared," because ideally LODDs would never happen in the first place. But the sad reality is that they do happen. Unfortunately, 23 times this year alone (at the time of publishing), chiefs of police have gotten "that" call and police departments across the United States have had to face a loss of one of their own.
Though it’s a scenario no department wants to face, it’s one that requires discussion and preplanning.
