Lawmakers looking to shrink Texas' prison population and costs are considering a bill that would allow some people convicted of committing serious crimes as minors to apply for parole in half the time they're currently allowed.
The bill sponsored by Democratic state Rep. Joe Moody, of El Paso, would allow people convicted of capital murder or other first-degree felonies committed when they were under 18 to be eligible for parole after serving half of their sentences or 20 years, whichever is shorter. Those convicted of committing capital murder as minors, for example, would be eligible to apply for parole after serving 20 years instead of the current 40 years.

As crime gets more sophisticated, complex crime-fighting technology is picking up the pace as well. Machine-learning and AI tools are quickly being incorporated into the mix as new weapons in the fight against crime. For example, scientists at the University of Leon in northwest Spain are working with INCIBE, the Spanish National Cybersecurity Institute, to develop a new AI tool for law enforcement work. The new evidence-recognizing tool uses artificial intelligence to identify objects in photographs taken by forensic teams and also searches for links with other crimes.

No roadside work site is ever truly safe, due to the number of distracted, impaired and/or incompetent drivers on the road. Officers can help reduce risks through proper procedures, constant situational awareness and having an escape route ready if things go south.
As soon as an officer has stopped for a roadway incident – be it a vehicle check or traffic accident – they need to visually assess the scene in all directions before doing anything else.

Traffic stops are one of the most common, yet most risky, tasks that a police officer undertakes. Traffic-related fatalities rank No. 2 for LEOs, and more than 7,000 are injured each year due to traffic related events. The list of causes often includes high-risk vehicle events, such as pursuits, which can quickly lead to death or injury. Unlike bullet proof vests and body cameras, the industry has done very little to reduce vehicle-related risks. StarChase is a solution that empowers law enforcement with safe alternatives during these high-risk traffic situations.

Sociologists and behaviorists are frequently interested in how we psychologically attribute character traits to one another. One such area of empirical study is the attribution of heroism.
The status of hero is achieved not only through action, but also through the perspective of others. In other words, if one accomplishes the most heroic act, yet nobody knows about it, he or she is not yet a hero (well, perhaps to oneself). It is through the marriage of heroic action, plus the witnessing of it, plus the hero attribution by another, that one "becomes" a hero. So, being a hero is really a very dependent condition.
