As authorities grapple with a spree of explosions in Austin, federal statistics show such incidents have increased in recent years, but have claimed fewer lives. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives reported 439 bombings across the nation in 2016, with the highest numbers occurring in California and Florida. That marked a 10 percent increase from 2015.

Taking a walk may have deadly consequences, and the risk appears to be greater in those states that have legal adult use of recreational marijuana. The rate of fatal injury to pedestrians has grown faster than any other vehicle-related deaths for the years of rapid legalization of marijuana. That rate increased 27 percent between 2007 and 2016, while other types of traffic deaths had decreased by 14 percent. While a direct relationship to marijuana use cannot be determined, other sources indicate that the use of marijuana is likely a factor when the driver of a vehicle is using cannabis.

A 35-year-old man died early Saturday in law enforcement custody after ingesting a white powdery substance before his arrest near Austin. Travis County sheriff's deputies were called about 11 p.m. Friday to a nightclub in the 16300 block of North Interstate 35 where a patron and a security guard had gotten into an altercation, the sheriff's office said.
