A fugitive died at a hospital after allegedly ambushing El Paso County sheriff's deputies with an AR-15 rifle on Tuesday in the Montana Vista desert, officials said.
Mauricio Hernandez, 31, died at University Medical Center of El Paso after being shot in a shootout with the SWAT officers late Tuesday night, sheriff's officials said Wednesday.
Hernandez was on El Paso's most-wanted fugitives list and was sought on five warrants, officials said. No officers were injured in the six-hour confrontation.

With children spending all their time at home, Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez is urging adults to be more vigilant about the children around them and to keep an eye out for signs of abuse.
"The No. 1 reporters of child abuse are teachers," Gonzalez wrote in a tweet. "But kids aren't seeing them right now. Neighbors and other family members, PLEASE pay close attention."

A San Marcos police officer who was struck by a car on I-35 and transported to a trauma center for surgery on Monday afternoon is in stable condition following that surgery.
According to an official with the San Marcos Convention and Visitor Bureau, Officer Paul Beller "will have a long recovery ahead of him, but we appreciate the concern and kind messages from the community."

An Austin area distillery donated 1,000 bottles of hand sanitizer to the Austin Police Department and other Texas law enforcement agencies.
Driftwood based Desert Door Distillery, a sotol based spirit producer, donated the bottles in an effort to help protect officers around the state amidst the spread of the coronavirus.
“We’re forever grateful to the distillery,” said Austin Police Association President Ken Casaday. “They’re a great community partner.”
