Sheriffs' offices in border towns and police departments from Val Verde to Starr County went before the Committee on Homeland Security and Public Safety at the Texas Capitol in Austin to talk about Operation Border SMART (Strategic Mobile And Response Team).

Real County Sheriff Bruce Carr died Saturday after a long struggle with cancer. Funeral services were held Thursday at Frio Canyon Baptist Church in Leakey. Bruce was in law enforcement throughout his entire adult life, serving as a military police offer in the U.S. Army and going on to work 33 years for the Harris County Sheriff's Department as a motorcycle patrol officer, detective and a member of the FBI task force on human trafficking. He retired and moved to Leakey, then came out of retirement to work as a deputy for the Real County Sheriff's Department. Carr was sworn in as Real County sheriff in January 2015.

Representing the department in the Senate Chamber were Sheriff Jim Skinner, Deputy Charles "Chuck" Sibley, Lieutenant Tami McCullough, Commander Matt Langan and Assistant Chief Terry McCraw. The Texas Senate unanimously passed a resolution commending Sibley and McCullough for their heroic actions that saved the lives of four individuals.

A man described as a transient has been arrested in the death of a local attorney who was found dead at his home with obvious trauma, officials confirmed. Justin Nickolas Twyne, 24, was arrested in New Orleans for the stabbing death of James Short, 74, Travis County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Kristen Dark told Patch. Short was found stabbed to death in his southwest Travis County home on April 7 along the 8000 block of Rockwood Circle.
The two men had exchanged text messages and had gone shopping together at an area Wal-Mart before Short's death, Dark said during a telephone interview. A previously released surveillance camera image of Twyne as police sought him was derived from that shopping excursion, Dark added.

The shooting death of a deputy constable in Texas this week added to the rise in U.S. law officers killed in the line of duty in 2017: 34 so far this year, a jump of 10 percent from 2016. Still, gun-related deaths are down almost 40 percent, according to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund. The statistics show a 27 percent increase in traffic-related police deaths but a 38 percent decrease in firearms-related deaths.
