A man in custody for his alleged role in a 2015 fatal robbery linked to narcotics trafficking now is also accused of being involved with another, apparently unrelated killing. On Friday, Angel Lagos-Martinez, 20, was charged with murder for the Jan. 14 fatal shooting of Leonidas Ayesta-Carias, 29. On that day, Ayesta-Carias was with his wife and two sons, ages 7 and 10, when he pulled into the parking lot of an apartment complex in the 700 block of Richcrest Drive in north Harris County.
Harris County sheriff's deputies said Lagos-Martinez ran up to the car and fired a single shot from a pistol before fleeing the scene. Ayesta-Carias was struck in the head and later died at Memorial Hermann Hospital. Sheriff's deputies said physical evidence and accounts from eyewitnesses tied him to the scene. They did not release information about a possible motive.

Regardless of how much technology has evolved over the decades, traffic stops have largely remained the same and likely will not change much in the near future: A violation is observed, and the occupants of the vehicle are temporarily detained on the side of the road while the traffic stop is investigated. This includes checking for warrants and other potential crimes; traffic stops are still one of the most effective tools patrol officers can use for proactive crime prevention.

The leader of the nation's largest sheriff's department said Wednesday that federal officials should restore the flow of surplus military equipment to local law enforcement agencies to ensure officers aren't put in danger when responding to active shooter calls and terrorist attacks. Los Angeles County Sheriff Jim McDonnell told members of the House Judiciary Committee that it was critical for the federal government to reconsider the curtailment of a program that provided military-style equipment, including military grenade launchers, bayonets, armored vehicles and high-powered firearms and ammunition, to state and local police departments.
