There is too much negative publicity surrounding law enforcement agencies today, and missteps over social media are the last thing they should be faced with. We live in a digital world, in a world of instant communications and, of course, a world dominated by social media. What can be a tool to help departments mend their community relations has instead become tool of inconvenience. The problem is not social media per se, but the lack of clarity in social media guidelines.

A 60-year-old Kennard man has been sentenced to prison for federal environmental violations, U.S. Attorney John M. Bales announced. Rodney K. Beshears pleaded guilty on Feb. 9 to violating the work practice standards of the Clean Air Act and was sentenced to 12 months and one day in federal prison by U.S. District Judge Rodney Gilstrap.

Police in Texas say more crimes are being committed with imitation weapons like BB guns, likely because they're cheap, easy to obtain and criminals may believe — mistakenly — that if they're caught, they'll avoid the severe punishment that can come with illegally possessing a real one. Police Lt. Christopher Cook in the Dallas suburb of Arlington says his officers are being told by arrested suspects of their preference for the imitation weapons. They can be purchased for as little as $25 and no background check is required.

After the 2012 killing of Trayvon Martin in Florida and the 2014 killing of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, the Black Lives Matter movement successfully pushed police brutality to the forefront of the national conversation. Naturally, there was some pushback from conservatives and cops who said they were the real victims — that police are put in more danger every year by their jobs, and that the rhetoric of Black Lives Matter isn't helping keep them safe.
The sentiment, most experts pointed out, ran counter to the facts: People of color really are disproportionately killed by police; and violence against police seems to be at a multi-decade low. But that hasn't stopped "Blue Lives Matter," which apparently began as a hashtag in response to the popularity of #BlackLivesMatter, from swelling into a veritable cause of its own.
