Texas law enforcement groups are worried if officers die of COVID-19, their families won't receive death benefits.
They are asking Gov. Greg Abbott to act.
Nine officers have died due to the novel coronavirus statewide, according to the Combined Law Enforcement Association of Texas, and when it comes to protecting the families left behind, the state's largest police union says Texas is not doing enough.

Police in Wichita have announced an arrest in a nearly 2-year-old murder case.
Juan Carlos Caballeros-Yescas, 27, was arrested May 9 in El Paso, Texas, and extradited to Kansas, Wichita police said in a recent news release.
Caballeros-Yescas is charged with first-degree murder and aggravated burglary in the July 7, 2018, shooting death of 41-year-old Lucy Mojica in her Wichita home, police said.

Since publishing this report, KXAN has learned the Governor's Office granted an exception to the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement to conduct final inspections of new police departments, which will allow those departments to open. Kim Vickers, executive director of TCOLE, said the inspections began Tuesday, May 26. Abbott's office made the policy change within a day after KXAN began asking questions of his office, TCOLE and local jurisdictions.

A 25-year-old man accused of pushing an Austin park ranger into the water at Commons Ford Metropolitan Park last month is now also accused of threatening to kill the officer who arrested him, authorities say.
Brandon Hicks was first charged with attempted assault on a public servant — a state jail felony — after video footage captured a man, who Austin police believe to be Hicks, pushing the park ranger off a boardwalk along Lake Austin on April 30.

An Alabama man has been arrested on suspicion of a terrorist offense after allegedly making death threats to a town's sheriff.
John Owen Compton, 57, of Decatur, was wanted by Morgan County authorities after allegedly making threats against Sheriff Ron Puckett and his family.
Compton is accused of making the threatening phone calls to Puckett from mid-May.

In response to an idea from New York police officers concerned about the coronavirus, Ford announced it's launching a "heated sanitation software" technology that essentially cooks away viruses inside 2013-2019 Police Interceptor SUVs.
The company tested the new software in vehicles owned by the Michigan State Police, New York City Police and Los Angeles Police, and the agencies are now using the technology, confirmed Elizabeth Kraft, Ford spokeswoman.
