A woman who fatally shot her two daughters did not target her estranged husband because she "wanted him to suffer" the memory of their deaths, a sheriff said Wednesday. Christy Sheats, 42, "had ample time" on Friday to shoot Jason Sheats after she called a family meeting at their home west of Houston, Fort Bend County Sheriff Troy Nehls said during a news conference. Jason Sheats, 45, thought his wife was going to discuss a possible divorce with the couple's daughters, Nehls said, but she instead shot Madison Sheats, 17, and Taylor Sheats, 22.

The horrific and dangerous scene is all too familiar: Shots fired, emergency responders rush to the scene to subdue a shooter but not before the suspect kills or injures others. That was the scenario simulated inside the Robert R. Muntz Library at The University of Texas at Tyler, where first responders conducted an active shooter drill. In partnership with the Tyler Police Department, Tyler Fire Rescue, ETMC and the local office of the FBI, UT-Tyler police staged the drill as a way to train employees and students on how to respond when they are faced with an active shooter situation.

Removing those who drive from the road if they are under the influence of drugs or alcohol just got more complicated for law enforcement officers. The U.S. Supreme Court recently ruled that obtaining biologic specimens using a breathalyzer is allowed, but obtaining blood specimens will require a warrant. While this ruling has some impact in cases of driving under the influence of alcohol, the bigger impact will be felt in marijuana DUIs, where blood testing is the only legal means of determination.

Online interactions between gang members rarely involve formed sentences. Instead, they are conducted in codes that involve written text interspersed with emoticons, hashtags, numbers, special characters, photos, video and music clips. Think of these codes as the gang's shibboleth separating "in-group" members from "out-group" pretenders. Law enforcement agencies across the United States are expanding their capacities to police cyberspace and take on the growing threat posed by digital gangs and cybercrime.

Starting in 2010, Congress named June 27 PTSD Awareness Day and in 2014, the Senate designated the full month of June for National PTSD Awareness Month. Sadly, PTSD has all too often led officers to commit suicide. According to a study done by Badge of Life, 141 cops took their own lives in 2008, and in 2009 there were 143 police suicides.
There is no way of telling how many of those tragedies were caused by PTSD, but one can confidently say that at least some of them were the result of PTSD. Regardless of the cause, it is incumbent on police leaders today to work hard to put suicide prevention capabilities in place so that officers can get the support they need in difficult times.
