Hood County deputy falls in line of duty, suspect killed

Hood County Sgt. Lance McLean was shot in the head June 28 by Ricky Don McCommas, 49. McCommas was described by police as a firearms dealer and former security guard. McLean was considered a "devoted" family man. And with his wife, Katy, they were raising two special-needs children — one of whom is autistic. The other is in a wheelchair.

Hundreds pay respects to fallen Texas deputy

Hood County Sheriff Sgt. Lance McLean's empathy, willingness to help and his mischievous sense of humor were remembered as hundreds of people — including officers from around the state — filled Hico Tiger Stadium to pay their respects.
Upshur County sheriff seizes 27 dogs, puppies

Under the authority of the Upshur County Sheriff's Office, the SPCA of Texas seized and took custody of 27 cruelly confined dogs and puppies from a property in Gilmer, Texas. The dogs appear to have various health issues, including hair loss, flea infestation, nasal discharge and eye discharge. Of the 27 dogs, there were 10 puppies.

Bowie County sheriff seeks to help 9 abandoned donkeys

The nine donkeys were set to be auctioned off, but no one bid to buy the animals. At that point, Bowie County sherrif's Lt. Stanley Crowley stepped in. Though the donkeys are being housed at separate locations, their once-deteriorated health is improving, as Crowley seeks to find homes for them. There is no fee associated in adopting the donkeys.

Advantages of the passenger-side approach

It's hard to believe in this day and age that a lot of guys and gals out on the street are still using the driver-side approach on a traffic stop. Change is something cops don't take to well. When things change, we get uncomfortable; and when cops become uncomfortable, we become grouchy. This makes progressive training and review of tactics very difficult for some agencies. On a typical traffic stop, approaching a vehicle from the passenger side and conducting the stop from that side is the safer choice in many ways.

Texas executes Kimberly McCarthy, 500th execution since 1982

Kimberly McCarthy, 52, was put on death row for the beating to death Dorothy Booth, 71, a retired professor of psychology, during the commission of a robbery in 1997. And on June 26, she became the 500th individual executed in the state of Texas since 1982.

Judge rules against Utah law limiting federal law enforcement authority

A federal judge has ruled there is a substantial risk of "irreparable harm," with public confusion that could result if a state law limiting federal law enforcement authority is allowed to take effect. Scott Risner, arguing on behalf of the U.S. Attorney's Office, said any restrictions found in a state law that would limit the federal government's authority turns the U.S. Constitution on its head.
