Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez, who was recently nominated to lead U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), joined Houston Matters to discuss criminal justice in Harris County and his recent nomination from President Joe Biden.
The sheriff was tapped by the Biden administration in April to lead ICE and is currently waiting to be confirmed by the U.S. Senate.

Overpopulation: Nueces County to move dozens of inmates to other counties

The Nueces County Commissioners Court has approved some much-needed help for the county jail. Subject to some language change, they passed two memorandum of understandings (MOU) to transfer inmates to Aransas and Victoria counties. The language that needs to be adjusted involves the COVID-19 pandemic’s effect on overcrowding the jail.

Bowie County sheriff asks commission to fund more bulletproof vests

Bowie County Sheriff Jeff Neal says his department needs more bulletproof vests, and he is requesting thousand of dollars from the Commissioner’s Court for the purchase.
Sheriff Neal is requesting $26,500 from the commission to supply more vests for his department. The level two vests are those typically worn by officers daily and protect against most handguns.

Truckers answer Texas sheriff's CB call for help to end high speed police pursuit

A law enforcement agency out of Hall County, Texas, issued a heartfelt thank you to several truck drivers who answered a call for help in stopping a suspect who was fleeing from police. The police pursuit occurred on July 1 through Hall County into Donley County, Texas and involved several law enforcement agencies, according to the Hall County Sheriff’s Office.

Orange County deputies welcome 2 new K-9 team members

Deputies at the Orange County Sheriff's Office are welcoming two new K-9 team members to help with daily operations.
The patrol division will now have the help of K-9s Rudy and Phoenix for traffic stops, suspect tracking and routine searches of the jail. They are the first K-9s to serve within the Orange County Sheriff's Office.

Report: 61% of US counties now 'Second Amendment sanctuaries'

The majority of all U.S. counties have been designated as Second Amendment sanctuaries, according to an analysis by SanctuaryCounties.com.
As of June 20, there are 1,930 counties “protected by Second Amendment Sanctuary legislation at either the state or county level,” representing 61% of 3,141 counties and county-equivalents in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

Democrats introduce bill to ban facial recognition in public housing

A group of Democratic lawmakers has introduced a bill that would ban the use of facial recognition technology in public housing.
Rep. Ayanna Pressley, Rep. Yvette Clarke and Rep. Rashida Tlaib introduced the “No Biometric Barriers to Housing Act of 2021,” a bill that dovetails a similar one introduced in 2019.
