The Mitchell County Sheriff's Office seized a large shipment of liquid methamphetamine during a traffic stop Monday afternoon. At 1:30 p.m., a Mitchell County Sheriff's deputy performed a traffic stop on a vehicle traveling eastbound on I-20, just outside of Colorado City. After the vehicle was stopped, the deputy requested a dog to come search the vehicle. Sweetwater Police Department responded with K9 Stalin, who assisted with positively identifying drugs in the vehicle.

Autopsy results show a Texas A&M University student whose body was found last year at his fraternity house died of an accidental drug and alcohol overdose. The Brazos County Sheriff's Office says Sigma Phi Epsilon member Matthew Hayes of Beaumont was discovered unresponsive Dec. 6 in his bedroom.

A Rusk County woman who had 46 animals seized from her property in June has turned over custody but still could face animal cruelty charges, according to the Rusk County Sheriff's Office. Mary Katherine Erskine handed over the animals this past week to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals of Texas in an agreement that stipulates she will not have to pay $14,000 in vet bills and fines, according to Sgt. David Roberts with the sheriff's office.

There was a time in Texas history — from just before the days of the republic up until 1923 — when death sentences were carried out by local authorities. Veteran law enforcement officer West Gilbreath has researched these executions for his book, "Death on the Gallows: The Encyclopedia of Legal Hangings in Texas" (Wild Horse Press). Gilbreath, a captain with the University of North Texas Police Department, previously published a similar look at legal hangings in New Mexico.

An acquisition that promises to deter unauthorized immigrants is coming to the border: iris recognition devices. Thirty-one sheriffs, representing every county along the U.S.-Mexico border, voted unanimously to adopt tools that will capture, catalogue, and compare individuals' iris data, for use both in jails and out on patrol.
