There are major changes coming in the Bexar County Sheriff's Office pursuit policy. Sheriff Javier Salazar said that the district attorney is in the process of reviewing a draft of his revisions.
In January, the sheriff formed the SCOPE team (Sheriff and Citizens Organized for Public Engagement), which is made up of community members and deputies. Sheriff Salazar says that they created a draft with the purpose of making the pursuit policy more clear and concise. The draft reduced the 14-page document to nine pages. The last revision to the policy was in 2014.

U. Renee Hall will be the new Dallas chief of police. Hall will be the first female police chief in the city's history and will start on Sept. 5, the city announced on Wednesday. Hall has been on the Detroit police force for nearly two decades and became deputy chief in 2014.

Hundreds of patrol vehicles could be facing safety checks in Houston and Harris County after officers in Austin and other parts of the country apparently became ill from exhaust leaks while on patrol in special-edition Ford Explorers. A Laredo woman faces federal drug trafficking charges after police seized 75 pounds of liquid crystal methamphetamine worth $2 million inside her vehicle, according to the Austin Police Department. The 23-year-old woman was stopped for speeding in Austin last week, and officers became suspicious of her during their interaction, APD said in a statement.

The number of police officers and federal agents who died in the line of duty has jumped this year, an increase largely attributable to a spike in car crashes and job-related illnesses, according to a new report.
The report, by the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, comes as the nation approaches the anniversaries of July 2016 ambush killings that left eight officers dead in Dallas and Baton Rouge, fanning a furious national debate over anti-cop sentiment. The statistics were also released two days after the funeral of a New York police officer ambushed on July 5.

A new facility incorporating a virtual reality simulator along with a physical training environment was introduced last month in Monmouth County, New Jersey.
