One East Texas sheriff's office says they had just finished going to the funerals for the five officers killed in Dallas. Now, they say they will have to unfortunately go to several more, after the recent shootings in Baton Rouge. Back in March, the Smith County Sheriff's Office says they were in a situation where shots were fired back at them during a pursuit.
Smith County Sheriff Larry Smith says there are changes they will have to make, as well as some they need the community to do, now more than ever.

Harris County Sheriff Ron Hickman traveled to the far northwest corner of the county to meet with a group of troubled teens. He went to teach, but also learn. He went to listen to people who are accustomed to not being heard. Hickman visited the TAPS Academy in Hockley, located just northwest of Houston on U.S. 290. The TAPS Academy is home to nearly 100 teens between 13 and 17 who have been convicted of adult crimes. Both boys and girls live at the academy.

During a drug raid this week, in an effort to take a new approach to the war on drugs in his community, Henderson County Sheriff Botie Hillhouse placed a yard sign in front of the home that reads, "Drug house raided. Don't be next." Two people in that home were arrested and booked into the Henderson County Jail after deputies found methamphetamine in the home. Hillhouse says since the beginning of June, 20 drugs users or dealers have been arrested. He said the new yard signs are a message for offenders.

Office of the Governor
Gov. Greg Abbott has announced an effort to strengthen penalties for crimes committed against law enforcement officers — the Police Protection Act. The proposal is punctuated by making it a hate crime for anyone to commit a crime against a law enforcement officer out of bias against the police. The governor will request the state legislature to pass the Police Protection Act in the 2017 legislative session.

Texas Department of Public Safety Director Col. Steve McCraw, told a Texas House committee that only two of Texas' 14 border counties are under "operational control." No Texas border counties have been raised to the highest security level of "substantial control." McCraw testified before a hearing hosted by the Texas House Appropriations Committee, which was looking at how the $800 million budgeted by the 2015 legislative session is being spent and what results are being achieved. It appears the results are still a work in progress.

A morning ride to work delivered an unexpected surprise for Tarrant County Precinct 5 Deputy Constable Craig Diebold. When a black Jeep Cherokee sped past him, he signaled for the driver to pull over. Little did Diebold know that an expectant father, Caleb Hall, was behind the wheel of that Jeep; and his wife, Destiny Hall, was in labor on the passenger side.

Support is pouring in for Dallas in the wake of the recent deadly attack on police, which left five officers dead and injured half a dozen others. Among those rallying behind the police department are two young girls, 12-year-old Lauren Roach and 11-year-old Landry Nelon, who dropped off a check for $10,000 — money they raised in just two days with a lemonade stand in North Dallas.

Sheriff John Cary Bittick of Monroe County, Georgia, writes: "Facts, as presented in our technology-fueled world, are often mere opinions of the uninformed. We have become a mass of people so consumed with a drive for instant gratification that we often do not take the time to doubt what is being presented to us as news. With a flick of our fingers we have local, state, and world-wide news at our literal fingertips, but how often do we question what is being scrolled across our smart-phone screens? How often do we examine what the talking heads on the television spout as the exclusive truth?"

Dick Fairburn, who has more than 30 years of law enforcement experience in both Illinois and Wyoming, writes: "I have tracked ambush killings of American police officers since 1997, when we first noticed a growing trend. Now, almost 20 years later, the technique has reached almost epidemic proportions. On July 7, five Dallas officers were killed and seven more were wounded in perhaps the highest single-shooter ambush tally — so far. Two more officers were shot on July 8: One in Missouri and another in Georgia.
"An ambush attack can happen anywhere, any time, and to any officer — or group of officers. We are targeted in restaurants, in our cars, while on foot patrol, when responding to calls for service, and while protecting large scale events. Here are some thoughts on each kind of attack."
