An investigation is underway after a longtime deputy with the Harris County Sheriff's Office was found dead in his home overnight. The man's daughter became concerned when she couldn't reach him and called the Harris County Precinct 4 Constable's Office to do a welfare check. Deputies entered the man's home and made the discovery.

The Taylor County Sheriff's Office says the Abilene man who turned in a cell phone linked to an abduction in West Texas has been identified. But, the sheriff's office is not releasing his name. According to the sheriff's office, he recently found a cell phone that has been linked to an abduction "in the Permian Basin area," which includes the Midland/Odessa region. He turned the phone into a "local cellphone store."

Throughout three decades in law enforcement, there isn't a lot Wise County Sheriff Lane Akin hasn't seen. At least that was until he read a new Texas Department of Public Safety directive a few days ago. "No one really knew it was coming," says Akin, who became sheriff in 2016.
A new policy that goes into effect Sept. 1 requires local county and city law enforcement departments to now pay to use the state crime lab in Austin.

Apple filed a patent recently for a more discreet way to contact 911 using fingerprint technology. Most smartphones can contact emergency services without being unlocked. However, the patent says, it could be "readily apparent to someone watching" and "may not be practical." If the patented technology is used in future iPhones, users would predetermine a fingerprint or a sequence of touches to contact emergency services.
