Grimes County Sheriff Don Sowell along with other sheriffs are together this week for the Sheriff's Association of Texas Annual Conference. Sowell was the association's president last year. He'll step down, and in his place will be Limestone County Sheriff Dennis Wilson.
Chuck Norris, who owns a ranch in Grimes County, was guest speaker at the conference.

Shooting deaths of police officers have spiked for the first half of the year compared to last year. According to a preliminary report from the National Law Enforcement Officer's Memorial Fund, police shooting deaths are up 78 percent from January to July. The report states 32 officers have died in firearms-related incidents and 14 of those deaths were ambush-style attacks.
The National Law Enforcement Memorial Fund's preliminary report states law enforcement deaths across the country are up 8 percent. It said 63 officers have died on-duty nationwide in 2016 with the majority of those deaths — 14 — being in Texas. Louisiana has seen the second-most police officer deaths this year with seven.

Fayette County Sheriff Keith Korenek's drug interdiction team is making a major impact on the flow of drugs that have been missed by border checkpoints. The team has also become accomplished at interdicting large amounts of cash headed towards the Mexican border.
Korenek made drug enforcement a major priority for his department when he was first elected in 2004. As he approaches the end of his third term as sheriff, his department is seeing the goals become reality as the record of his department's success in drug interdiction grows.

The Travis County sheriff’s office has released details on the funeral and visitationfor Sgt. Craig Hutchinson, who was shot and killed early Monday outside his Round Rock home. The visitation will be on Monday, Aug. 1, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Cook Walden Funeral Home, at 6100 North Lamar Blvd., in Austin, officials said.
The funeral will take place Tuesday, Aug. 2, at 10 a.m. at the Shoreline Church, located at 15201 Burnet Road. It will be followed by a graveside service with police honors at Cook Walden-Capital Parks, located at 14501 North Interstate 35.

The Dallas Police Department says job applications to the force have more than quadrupled since a man shot and killed five police officers and wounded nine others and two civilians. A department statement recently says 467 applications were received in the 12 days after the July 7 shootings during what had been a peaceful protest of recent police shootings of black men. That's an average of nearly 39 per day.
