Central Texas authorities have reunited a boy with his mother and taken his father into custody after they say the man fled the scene of a crash and left the child behind. The Williamson County Sheriff's Office posted photos of the boy on Twitter on Saturday night. The tweet said that the images were being released out of "desperation" because there was no other way of identifying the child, who was unable to provide useful information.

A West Texas sheriff's deputy has been fired after video showed him driving down a Texas highway with an inmate sitting on the roof. The deputy had been transporting 31-year-old Martin Gregory Estrada when the man broke a patrol car window and climbed onto the vehicle's roof. The deputy summoned help and didn't stop until backup arrived.

Eight boys have been removed from a religious boarding home in Central Texas as authorities investigate allegations that include abuse, child labor, neglect and human trafficking. Several local and state agencies searched The Joshua Home in rural Burnet County last week, about a month after a Missouri sheriff let authorities know that the group was moving there, KXAN-TV reported.

The nation's fourth largest jail resides in Harris County, with a population of about 9,000 inmates. The Harris County Sheriff's Office says a quarter of those inmates suffer from some form of mental illness.
To help alleviate a slew of problems that come with over-jailing or over-hospitalizing people who have a mental illness, the sheriff’s department unveiled a Telepsychiatry pilot program. Since its launch in December, the program has garnered attention from California to Canada. Harris County officials believe it’s one of the first programs of its kind, if not the first program of its kind. The new initiative connects deputies in the field with counselors and psychiatrists on iPads.

The number of U.S. law enforcement officers who died in the line of duty in the first six months of the year rose about 12 percent to 73 from 65, the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund said last week. Gunfire was the leading cause of death among the 73 officers killed in the first half of the year, accounting for 42 percent of the deaths, according to the memorial fund.
