Texas Gov. Greg Abbott on Monday touted the state's new law banning sanctuary cities as a way to curb human trafficking and other crimes. He called human trafficking a byproduct of broken borders and said the sanctuary cities law that he signed this year would help fix the problem.
"It would remove from the streets dangerous criminals, not detain hardworking families and innocent children," Abbott told the Sheriffs' Association of Texas in Grapevine. "I appreciate the strong support the law has received from so many sheriffs across Texas."

Eighteen counties in Texas have entered into new pacts with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement that allow local officers to enforce federal immigration laws, officials said Monday. With 19 local entities on board, Texas accounts for almost one-third of the 60 pacts nationwide in a once-dormant program.

To incorporate a culture, one must start at the bottom and work his way up.

A Texas sheriff got steamed at state government and took his complaint to a familiar late-night audience — Facebook. By the next morning, sheriffs statewide were joining Wise County Sheriff Lane Akin's protest against new state fees that blindsided local officials. Within three days, Gov. Greg Abbott asked officials to cancel plans to charge for laboratory evidence analysis. Net savings to Texas counties next year: $5.8 million.

With law enforcement groups voicing their opposition to the proposed "bathroom bill," Texas Gov. Greg Abbott suggested they take a closer look at the bill before speaking out against it. The Senate recently passed a bill that regulates restrooms in government buildings and public schools, requiring Texans to use the facility that matches the gender on their birth certificates or Texas ID. Two bills filed in the House have yet to receive a public hearing.
