An East Texas county official is working to increase resources for mental health patients who wind up in jail. Smith County Sheriff Larry Smith said people with mental health issues make up a substantial part of the smith county jail. He said it's a problem that needs to be solved statewide.
Individuals with mental health issues make up more than 17 percent of the total number of Smith County jail inmates, nearly one in five overall. The process of getting them to the jail takes crisis intervention deputies several hours at a time, simply to prove a patient is mentally incompetent.

The White House
Since 2009, President Barack Obama has made it a priority to provide local law enforcement with the tools necessary to protect the public while ensuring their own safety and wellness. To maintain his commitment and ensure that we are working toward strengthening the trust between communities and law enforcement, the president launched the Task Force on 21st Century Policing, designed to identify best practices and develop meaningful solutions to help law enforcement agencies and communities strengthen trust and collaboration, while ushering the nation into the next phase of community-focused policing.
In May of 2015, the Task Force released a report with 59 recommendations for reform. In June, in cooperation with the Department of Justice's Office of Community Oriented Policing Services, the White House began to host a series of briefings with local law enforcement agencies to help agencies learn how to implement the Task Force's recommendations.

Texas is feeling the pressure to ban texting and driving, statewide. Dozens of cities have done it, but that's created a patchwork of different laws and gaps where no ban exists.
Studies show the average driver is distracted for five seconds while making a text. At 55 miles per hour, that distracted driver would have covered the length of a football field. It's dangerous and reckless — and life threatening.
