A Spring man who rescued an abandoned infant left in an open field in northwest Houston was honored by Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez Wednesday night at the Harris County Sheriff's Training Academy in Humble. Albert Peterson was leaving for work at about 5 a.m. on Aug. 10, when he heard a baby crying. At first, Peterson thought the noise was a toy or an animal, and he followed the sound and found an infant, crying and covered in bugs and dirt.

McLennan County sheriff's deputies have arrested an Irving-area football coach accused of sexually abusing at least two boys in Waco in the 1990s. Shawn Risener, 46, has been charged with two counts of indecency with a child and one count of sexual assault of a child, all second-degree felonies.

The Dallas Police Department's new training manual and department policy will include new SB4 requirements and immigration laws.
"A rough draft of the training manual has been sent in and it's waiting for approval," said Dallas PD Major Reuben Ramirez, who is writing the new material. "We are still writing the department policy. We have to work closely with Dallas city attorneys on the policy," said Ramirez.

A Central Texas sheriff returned a payment-demand call and confronted a scammer who falsely claimed to be a deputy with his department. Williamson County Sheriff Robert Chody tweeted details of Tuesday's call in which the scammer answers: "sheriff's department." Chody provides his name, without saying he's the sheriff, and says he's returning a call to a deputy about owing money and a warrant. The caller eventually figures out he's speaking with a law officer before the line goes dead.

Newly released research found that law enforcement officers working for agencies with de-escalation policies are more to be killed or injured in the line of duty. Brian Landers, a former police officer who is now the chair of the criminal justice department at Madison College in Wisconsin, authored the study as part of his master's thesis. The research project concluded that on officer working for a de-escalation agency is twice as likely to be killed in the line of duty and 10 times more likely to be injured in the line of duty.
