The driver who led a Bell County Sheriff's deputy on a short pursuit in Harker Heights Tuesday afternoon died in a gun battle with the deputy, officials have confirmed. The deputy attempted to stop a small van on FM 2410 at 3:40 p.m. It is unclear what prompted the traffic stop. But, the driver fled eastbound and veered onto a private drive that curves onto a hill in the 12300 block of FM 2410 near Rummel Road. Shortly thereafter, the driver engaged in a shootout with the deputy. The deputy was unhurt, but the suspect was shot dead.

As lawmakers have wrestled in recent years with easing restrictions on marijuana use — an issue they likely will confront again when they convene in January — prosecutors in the state's most populated areas are relaxing their pursuit of cases that involve recreational amounts of the drug. An Austin American-Statesman analysis shows those practices are resulting in a spike of marijuana dismissals in Harris, Dallas, Bexar, Travis and Tarrant counties. Swearing, cursing, profanity ... whatever it is called, is part of the human experience. It is also part of police culture. And just as profanity varies in nature, content, function it serves, and acceptance across cultures, so does it in the world of policing. Perhaps the most important reality acknowledged by all three authors and many others is that profanity affects perception. This seems especially important in today’s climate and culture where there is extreme scrutiny of use of force and where such actions can co-occur with profanity.

Beside the sheer horrific nature and senselessness of the acts, the Sandy Hook shooting, the Boston Marathon bombing, the Orlando nightclub massacre share a critical commonality. In all of these cases many of the fatalities were caused not by the immediate blast or bullet, but by rapid and catastrophic bleeding. Unfortunately, this appears to be an increasing phenomenon, but it is one that can be prevented.
