A female student died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound Thursday after shooting and injuring another female student inside Alpine High School, according to Brewster County Sheriff Ronny Dodson. The incident began shortly before 9 a.m. in the town of 5,900 in Texas' Big Bend region. Authorities did not immediately release a possible motive for the gunfire.
Dodson said the injured student ran outside seeking help and was taken to a hospital with injuries that weren't considered life threatening. He said a federal law enforcement officer who was responding to the incident was shot in the leg when another officer's gun accidentally discharged.

A West Texas sheriff's deputy has been killed in a head-on collision while driving his SUV patrol vehicle to work. The Texas Department of Public Safety says 73-year-old Eastland County Sheriff's Office Deputy Kenneth Maltby died in the accident around 8 a.m. Wednesday.

Three jail guards have been suspended after a Texas sheriff said security video shows a restrained inmate being hit following an alleged assault on an officer. Harris County Sheriff Ron Hickman announced the suspensions with pay Wednesday and said the video shows unnecessary "punching." Hickman declined to release the video amid the investigation.

A 47-year-old former Orange County sheriff's detective has pleaded guilty to federal violations in the Eastern District of Texas, U.S. Attorney John M. Bales announced. Chad Wayne Hogan, of Orange, pleaded guilty to an information charging him with money laundering before U.S. Magistrate Judge Keith Giblin.

A Texas woman molested for four years as a child brought her abuser to justice as a cop more than a decade later, according to The Daily Beast. The unnamed victim says Erlis Chaisson, a family member, started sexually abusing her in the mid-1990s when she was 8 years old. According to KXXV-TV, Chaisson had already been convicted of molesting another 8-year-old girl a few years earlier.
