Recent weeks have shown the world exemplary efforts to save lives in Texas, both by the police and residents. The Houston metro area, which covers about 10,000 square miles, is crisscrossed by miles of water bodies like creeks, channels and bayous that drain into the Gulf of Mexico. These contributed to the devastation, leading to an epic scale of flooding. As the storm raged and the world watched South Texas submerge, the police prepared for the worst.

A man accused of fatally shooting a sheriff's deputy at a gas station pleaded guilty Wednesday to capital murder and accepted a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. The plea by Shannon Miles, of Houston, allowed him to avoid a possible death sentence for the August 2015 slaying of Darren Goforth. The 47-year-old Harris County sheriff's deputy was shot 15 times while at a suburban Houston gas station where he was putting fuel in his patrol car.

Detectives discovered the body of missing Baytown woman Crystal McDowell two weeks after her disappearance. The Chambers County Sheriff's Office says her ex-husband Steven McDowell, 44, is charged with murder. Crystal McDowell, 37, was a realtor and mother of two children — ages 5 and 8.
"This case was about trying to bring Crystal McDowell home, and we've made that happen and we've been able to charge who caused the disappearance, so I'm very proud of my team," Chambers County Sheriff Brian Hawthorne said. "I'm very proud of everybody that worked so hard for the last two weeks on this case."

Authorities are searching for a man who was caught on surveillance video pulling down two American flags and stealing one of them on the town square in Denton. The incident happened about 2 a.m. Saturday near the county courthouse, according to a news release from the Denton County Sheriff's Department. The video shows the man pulling down both flags and wadding one up. He walked off with the second flag, said Lt. Orlando Hinojosa, Sheriff's Department spokesman.

Taylor County Sheriff Ricky Bishop recently saddled up for a good cause. Bishop participated in the Cowboy Cops Rodeo at the Will Rogers Coliseum in Fort Worth. The event, which was hosted by the Grand Prairie Police Department, benefits Special Olympics Texas.
Bishop joined law enforcement officers from across Texas for the event.

The sheriff's office says the chase begin for a traffic violation in Texas and ended just southwest of Elk City, Oklahoma, on I-40, and seven to eight suspects fled the scene on foot.
