Local state and federal authorities closed down a Houston pool hall and arrested 14 people in a narcotics and human trafficking investigation. The action came after a months-long investigation by the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission, the Harris County Sheriff's Office, Homeland Security Investigations, the Harris County District Attorney's Office, Harris County Fire Marshals and the Texas Department of Public Safety.

A U.S. Border Patrol agent suspected of killing four prostitutes was arrested early Saturday after a fifth woman managed to escape from him and notify the authorities, law enforcement officials said, describing the agent as a "serial killer." Juan David Ortiz, an intel supervisor for the Border Patrol, fled from state troopers and was found hiding in a hotel parking lot in Laredo, Webb County Sheriff Martin Cuellar said. He said investigators have "very strong evidence" that he is responsible for the deaths of the four women.

The son and daughter-in-law of a former West African leader have been indicted on charges that they enslaved a girl from their native country while living in Texas. Mohamed Toure (too-RAY') and his wife, Denise Cros-Toure, were named in an indictment returned Wednesday. The Fort Worth residents, both 57, are charged with forced labor, alien harboring and conspiracy. Mohamed Toure also is charged with making false statements to federal agents.

An off-duty Kyle police officer was found deceased of a self-inflicted gunshot wound on Sunday evening, Sept. 16, the San Marcos Police Department said recently.
Fernando Solis, 28, was found in his personal vehicle around 5 p.m. in the parking lot of the Asbury Place Apartments, located in the 1300 block of Wonder World Drive in San Marcos.

More restrictive laws surrounding opioid prescriptions do not always have the results they intended. That appears to be the conclusion of a study published recently in a JAMA Surgery article dated Aug. 22. The study focused on the impact of the October 2014 change of hydrocodone products from Schedule III to Schedule II. The law intended to reduce the total quantity of hydrocodone prescribing, and it did. The number of hydrocodone products (HCP) prescribed across the nation declined significantly. But the recent study noted that the schedule change appears to have resulted in a slight increase in the amount of opioids prescribed initially.

A new study headed by an Advanced Force Science specialist finds that an officer who confronts a subject in the throes of excited delirium stands nearly a 90 percent chance of ending up on the ground in a struggle with potentially serious consequences. The more symptoms of excited delirium a subject exhibits the greater his likelihood of being violent, researchers report. And more than 40 percent of afflicted subjects are armed, generally with "weapons of opportunity" such as hammers, shovels, metal bars, pieces of wood and shards of glass.
