Funeral for Upton County deputy hosts high numbers

The unassuming town of Rankin hosted hundreds of people in one place for the funeral of beloved Upton County Sheriff Deputy Billy "Bubba" Kennedy. "Bubba was a protector — not only for his loved ones, but for everyone he met," Kennedy's brother-in-law, Barry Portman, said. "He was never afraid, and that's why we're here today."

Reynaldo Ybarra Zamora, 59, one of the state's "Top 10 Most-Wanted Sex Offenders," is now in custody after being arrested in Hays County. Zamora has a violent criminal past and was wanted for aggravated kidnapping, burglary of a habitation and evading arrest/detention.

Fired Dallas police officer pleads guilty to lying
The Dallas Morning News
A former Dallas police officer, who falsely claimed a man struck him with his car, has received two years of probation.
Eric Watts pleaded guilty and will be on deferred adjudication probation for two years for the misdemeanor charge of making a false report. He will not have a criminal conviction if he successfully completes probation.

As the end of the first week approached with no budget deal, however, chief judges of federal trial and appellate courts grappled with what to do once the money runs out.
US Supreme Court will take up anonymous tip, traffic stop issue

Two men driving a truck in California were pulled over for reckless driving, but they were not observed by the officer who conducted the stop. An anonymous tip was called in, alerting law enforcement to the vehicle's erratic driving. The stop later resulted in the men pleading guilty to a subsequent charge of transporting marijuana, but state and federal courts still disagree about whether it is lawful to pull a car over for an unobserved offense.
Smartphones dial up a controversy over search warrants

David Riley's smartphone ratted him out. San Diego police used photos and videos found on Riley's Samsung Instinct device to connect him to a gang-related shooting. Convicted on attempted murder and other charges, the 22-year-old is doing time at a California prison.

Cigarette trafficking: A big problem in a small package

Upton County deputy shot and killed, suspect in custody

With the debate surrounding gun ownership rights in the spotlight, the U.S. Supreme Court will soon hear a case involving a Tennessee man's right to own a firearm, even though he has a 12-year-old misdemeanor domestic assault charge on his record.
Meet 20for25, a new social networking site for law enforcement

A new site — 20for25.com — has launched as a closed, secure social media site, for cops by cops. "Law enforcement professionals need a place to network, share training ideas and socialize in a medium that is safe and secure," the new site said in an announcement of its launch, Aug. 19. So before law enforcement officers can complete registration, 20for25 verifies their credentials with their employing agency.
