A woman and her five children were killed in a fire that quickly engulfed their Texas home, authorities said Wednesday. Flames were already shooting from the home near Silsbee, about 80 miles northeast of Houston, when a neighbor called 911 about 12:15 a.m., Hardin County Sheriff Mark Davis said.

The Lampasas County Sheriff's Department is investigating a man's claim he found his puppy hanging from a tree Monday. Cole Gilmore mourned the loss of his 8-week-old puppy, Sue, and continues to come to grips with the heinous crime. He came home from work Monday to find three of his dogs loose in the yard. The dogs were taken off their chains and his new puppy was hanging by a nylon string from a tree.

A former South Texas juvenile justice department employee has been arrested for felony theft after authorities say he acknowledged stealing $1.2 million worth of fajitas over nine years. Cameron County District Attorney Luis Saenz told The Brownsville Herald that Gilberto Escaramilla was fired in August and arrested after authorities obtained a search warrant and found packages of the Tex-Mex food in his refrigerator.

Texas Department of Public Safety troopers opened fire in an attempt to end a vehicle pursuit that began in Atascosa County and ended on U.S. 281 in San Antonio late Wednesday. Atascosa County Sheriff David Soward said deputies there initiated the chase around 10:15 p.m. when they tried to stop 28-year-old Luis Garcia of Houston, who was driving a pickup truck with a flatbed trailer with faulty taillights.
