When you meet Hallie Barnard — or simply hear her story — it's impossible not to root for her.
The 10-year-old from Denton has a rare blood disorder called Diamond Blackfan Anemia and has lived most of her life in desperate need of a bone marrow transplant.
Throughout her journey, community support for Hallie has swelled — particularly from first responders.
They, too, were thrilled when they heard Hallie was going to get her transplant. And they wanted to make sure her big day was as big as it could possibly be.
So members of the Denton police, fire and sheriff's departments went to Hallie's home Tuesday morning with motorcycles, cruisers and fire trucks in tow — then picked her and her family up, and gave them a full escort to the hospital.

"Pay it forward." Those were the very words that Franklin County Sheriff A.J. Smith told fellow sheriff Brian Hawthorne of Chambers County, Texas, when he brought the department roughly $10,000 in cash and four tractor trailers full of relief supplies post-Hurricane Harvey. Jerrod Hardy writes:
As I prepare to step away from my career as a law enforcement officer after 21 years, I felt an overwhelming need to share my experience with as many others as possible.
As I walked around my department after announcing my intention, I was shocked and somewhat saddened by the many friends who said they too would like to retire, but they had no idea what else they would do in life.

However, we can try to teach some of those topics in our schools.

Lindsey J. Bertomen writes: "Police trivia question: What is the percentage of calls to which an officer responds where someone has a gun at the scene?
Answer: 100 percent.
If an officer is present, there is a gun at the scene.
As I was researching content for this article, I reflected on the academy and in-service training I have had on gun retention. A small percentage of it was based on the premise that someone was going to saunter up to an officer and reach for his or her gun."
