A Harris County sheriff's deputy is in the hospital after a pickup driver hit the driver's side of his patrol car near Crosby, in the northeast part of the county. About 9:45 p.m. Tuesday, a woman tried to enter the northbound lanes of a two-way street from the center turn lane, according to police. Her red Chevy pickup struck the deputy's marked cruiser traveling on FM 2100 (Crosby-Lynchburg Road).
The deputy's cruiser flipped over onto a grassy area along the road, according to Harris County sheriff's deputy Paul Begley. The impact crumpled the vehicle's windshield and mangled the driver's side door. The deputy was transported in stable condition to an area hospital with a possible broken leg. "They're still doing X-rays, but he's doing fine," Begley said of the injured deputy.

On Nov. 8, voters elected Republican Maurice Cook as Bastrop County's top law enforcement officer. On Wednesday, he was sworn into office at a public ceremony at the Bastrop County Courthouse. Cook, who calls himself a "working sheriff," was a Texas Ranger for 29 years. He was a highway trooper, then investigator, then chief of the agency. After leaving the Rangers, he got his law degree and ran the Alvin Community College police academy for 13 years.
Cook replaced interim Sheriff Rosanna Abreo, who took over for Terry Pickering in May when he resigned ahead of schedule to take a consulting job. He spoke after his swearing in and laid out his plans for his first 100 days in office.

One of the measures the Houston Police Department has taken recently is a tour of the city to teach cadets about its diversity. The tour makes stops in African-American, Asian, Latino and Muslim neighborhoods. Assistant Chief Charlie Vazquez, who oversees the Professional Development Command at HPD, says learning about Houston's diversity is useful for the cadets because they are introduced to members of the community who can help them establish trust in the groups they will be working with and that is a trust that eventually should lead to more effective policing.
