An off-duty Collinsville, Texas police officer followed a suspicious car last week and ended up saving a life. Earlier this week, he was honored for his actions. "I was at home off-duty and that's when I saw a vehicle drive down by the public storage units," Officer Jon Cheshire said. Cheshire says that was suspicious to him because they've had several break-ins there before. So, he called the officer on duty. But before they arrived, the suspect was already driving away.

In an effort to end deadly high-speed chases, the Houston Police Department will begin allowing officers to use a controversial driving maneuver that they hope will stop fleeing motorists before they threaten others on the road. On July 7, 2016, five Dallas police officers were killed and seven others wounded by an attacker who fired upon them during a protest march. Two citizens were also wounded by the rifle-armed assailant before he was killed by police with an explosives-laden robot. The Dallas sniper attack resulted in more police deaths and injuries than any other attack since 9/11, and the attempt to salvage actionable lessons from the event is ongoing in the law enforcement community.
It’s critical for law enforcement to recognize that our fellow public safety professionals from the fire and EMS communities were an integral part of the response that night, and there are many lessons to be learned from their experience.

As a soldier in the U.S. Army, Anna Cuthbertson served in the war zones of Iraq and Afghanistan. As a San Francisco police officer, she patrols the streets of the Richmond District, busting criminals and protecting citizens. The average person might think that's heroic enough. But in a selfless act initially meant to save one life, Cuthbertson, a mother of a 13-year-old girl, donated a kidney this week to a stranger, and in the process set off a chain reaction that made it possible for eight other people to receive lifesaving kidney transplants.

You're a cop. What does this mean? It means you do what's best in the interest of public safety. You control, regulate and keep order for a living. What's often forgotten? Controlling, regulating and keeping yourself in order. Cops often say to each other, "Watch your 6!" That is, you must keep aware of what's happening behind you and your partners, where bad guys lurk. But what about watching your 12? Who's making sure you are emotionally intact and not facing a mental ambush that could kill you as quickly as a felon's bullet?

For several years, the growing opioid crisis has been at the forefront of discussions among healthcare professionals, government officials and families who have lost loved ones to these addictive drugs. No corner of American society — regardless of age, ethnicity or background — has been spared from this drug epidemic. The overarching goal that has been echoed by many Americans as well as the Trump administration is to remove the plague of addiction in the U.S.

Taylor McCubbin, a senior NCO infantryman with the Canadian Armed Forces, writes: "Injuries can creep up on us, or afflict us suddenly. Especially at risk are those working in the military or law enforcement fields, with typical challenges such as walking long distances with heavy loads, jumping out of airplanes and being injured in dangerous situations with unruly members of the public. Typical injuries I see service members and police officers work through include back injuries, reduced stability holding a load, limited knee flexibility and limited hip flexibility. So how do we continue to perform even with an injury?"

While most police agencies have done a good job of collecting information regarding crimes and those who commit them, many have not gone the extra step and carefully analyzed the raw data. Most of their accumulated figures were gathered simply for statistical purposes. Indeed, many departments maintained good data on the numbers of murders, robberies, assaults, etc., for submission to the FBI as part of the FBI's Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program.

A slew of recent events has put a spotlight on the dangers of responding to such calls for the men in blue. The recent death of an Ohio police officer, Justin Yeo, is one such heartbreaking story.
