Tom Green County Sheriff's Office aids in interdiction operation, 16 arrests made

On Nov. 16 through Nov. 18, a multiple county highway contraband interdiction operation was conducted in Tom Green County. The operation was a joint collaboration between local, state and federal law enforcement partners, which included Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) San Angelo, Tom Green County Sheriff's Office, Sutton County Sheriff's Office, Concho County Sheriff's Office, U.S. Border Patrol, ICE-ERO, and the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS)-Highway Patrol. The operation resulted in 10 criminal arrests for federal and state law violations and six administrative arrests for federal immigration violations.

Awards, accolades and honors around the state

2020 Melvin Drum Chief Deputy of the Year award
The Chief Deputies Association of Texas awarded the 2020 Melvin Drum Chief Deputy of the Year award to Daniel W. "JR" Peters Jr., Chief Deputy of the Lavaca County Sheriff's Office. On Oct. 20, a surprise reception was had in the Lavaca County Commissioners' Courtroom honoring Chief Deputy Peters.
Carmen Napp, President of the Chief Deputies Association, presented Chief Deputy Peters with a plaque commemorating this achievement. Also present were Terry Pickering and Tramer Woytek from the Texas Association of Counties. Luis Buentello, Senior Field Representative of US Representative Michael Cloud, joined the celebration and presented Chief Peters with a certificate from Representative Cloud.
While Texas State Representative Ben Leman could not be present, Leigh Lindon from his office did present Chief Deputy Peters with a certificate at the Lavaca County Sheriff's Office at a later date.
SAT scholarship winner at Texas State University
Garrett Mangum is a Fall 2020 SAT scholarship recipient who is studying business management at Texas State University in San Marcos. He is the son of Lt. Henry S. Mangum Jr. of the Corpus Christi Police Department. Mangum is shown above with Nueces County Sheriff JC Hooper.

Three Fort Worth police officers were presented with Lifesaver Awards for helping to save the lives of two shooting victims on Oct. 19.
The MedStar crews who were part of the response presented the awards to officers Jessica Morgan, Chelsey Newsom and Claudia Alfaro.

The federal prison system will be among the first government agencies to receive the coronavirus vaccine, though initial allotments of the vaccine will be given to staff and not to inmates, even though sickened prisoners vastly outnumber sickened staff, according to documents obtained by The Associated Press.
