Travis County deputy killed in motorcycle crash while riding home from Louisiana

The Travis County Sheriff's Office is mourning one of its own after a deputy was killed in a motorcycle crash last Friday evening.
Sr. Deputy Robert "Drew" Small, 48, was riding his motorcycle home from Louisiana when it collided with another vehicle in Milam County.
Small, of Wimberley, was about to celebrate his 25-year anniversary of working for the sheriff’s office, having joined in December 1995.

It is with a heavy heart that the Collin County Sheriff's Office mourn the loss of Deputy Sheriff Mike "Mookie" Vance (Ret.) after a short illness. Vance was the Constable-Elect for Collin County Precinct #1 and a 34-year veteran peace officer.

Collin County detention officer dies after contracting COVID-19

In the early evening hours Tuesday, Collin County Detention Officer Joseph Quillen Jr. died after contracting the COVID-19 virus.
Quillen, a six-year U.S. Navy veteran, served as a detention officer in Collin County for 19 years and earned a Master Jailers certification and license.
A Collin County Sheriff's Office press release stated Quillen was a dedicated public servant who was an inspiration to a generation of officers he helped train.

Commander Ryan Urrutia presented two academic scholarships on behalf of Sheriff Richard Wiles and the Sheriffs’ Association of Texas.

Retired Brazoria County Deputy Sheriff Ed Whitaker
Brazoria County Deputy Sheriff H.E. (Ed) Whitaker ended his long-time career as a law enforcement officer on Sept. 30, 2020. He has served his community as a peace officer for just over 50 years.
Whitaker began his law enforcement career after having graduated from the Lubbock Police Academy and worked for that police department for two years. His desire to work for a smaller community and the fact that his wife had family living in the area prompted him to come to the Alvin area. He applied to and began working for the Alvin Police Department.
His 33-year career with Alvin PD also included graduating as an emergency medical technician and a 25-year career as a volunteer with the Alvin Volunteer Fire Department. His tenure with the Alvin PD included 29-plus years as a patrol supervisor and graduating from the FBI National Academy for municipal police management.
After retiring from the Alvin Police Department Whitaker accepted a position with the Brazoria County Sheriff's Office as a courthouse security deputy. He served in this capacity for the past 15-plus years.
Whitaker has been married to his wife for moer than 50 years. He has one son, one daughter, and one granddaughter.

Webb County sheriff announces appointment of executive chief

Webb County Sheriff Martin Cuellar on Tuesday announced the appointment of Scott G. Avant as executive chief.
A native of Cotulla, Texas, Avant has called Webb County home for 30 years. He brings more than 27 years of law enforcement experience. Avant comes from a law enforcement family. He is the son of retired La Salle County Sheriff Darwin Avant and the brother of Texas Department of Public Safety Chief of Intelligence and Counter Terrorism Dale Avant.
