The rumor that she isn’'t tough on criminal immigrants who pass through her jail has grown like a well-fertilized plant, embattled Dallas County Sheriff Lupe Valdez told a panel of state lawmakers on Thursday. And the head of Texas' state law enforcement agency told the committee that a fingerprint measure championed by Republican lawmakers has only hindered the department's efforts to identify possible criminals, including undocumented immigrants.
The remarks came during the first of several between-sessions hearings by the House State Affairs Committee, which is charged with investigating state-based immigration enforcement and local agency cooperation with the federal government.

The Fayette County Sheriff's Office said a traffic stop on I-10 yielded more than a quarter-million dollars in cash on Sunday. According to the sheriff's office, deputies stopped a Honda Odyssey van on I-10 for a traffic violation when they saw what was described as "several criminal indicators." After receiving consent to search the van, the deputies brought in narcotics K-9 officer Lobos.
Deputies said Lobos alerted them to the rear seats of the car for being the source of an illegal odor. When deputies searched the seats, they found approximately $290,000 in U.S. currency sewn into the seats.

Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office investigators have arrested a woman they say used her daughter to defraud people out of money. According to the department's Facebook page, the investigation started Oct. 22 when Child Protective Services reported to deputies that 46-year-old Juanita Garcia was fraudulently organizing fundraisers for her 7-year-old daughter.
Garcia was allegedly telling people in person and via social media that her daughter was ill with terminal cancer, and she only had months to live. Witnesses reported that the mom would approach them asking for donations to pay for treatments. Investigators discovered the girl was medically evaluated and no illness was found, however.

Sadly, some cops are being shot with their own weapons. At the same time, there is also an outcry about officers shooting so called unarmed individuals. Thugs have become emboldened in the present climate of civil unrest that seems to materialize every time a bad guy is shot. The "Ferguson effect," as it's become known, has caused a lot of police officers to dial back their proactiveness as they watch and read about another colleague being hung out to dry for doing his job.

The FBI's system for tracking fatal police shootings is a "travesty," and the agency will replace it by 2017, dramatically expanding the information it gathers on violent police encounters in the United States, a senior FBI official said recently. The new effort will go beyond tracking fatal shootings and, for the first time, track any incident in which an officer causes serious injury or death to civilians, including through the use of stun guns, pepper spray and even fists and feet.

Viral videos of police/citizen encounters are coming in by the truckload. Over and over again we're seeing both citizens and officers being injured/killed, or the officer winds up losing his or her job, and even going to prison. Much of what is happening now is the result of inadequate training. Today, training is centered on sensitivity training and communication skills. The problem is, no matter how much we want to avoid it, some situations require the officer to get physical.
