The nice old man near Old Town Spring calls 911 every month or so to complain about people hiding in the attic of his home. There's nothing there, of course, except the inventions of his dementia and schizoaffective disorder. But he's now on a first-name basis with the sheriff's office Crisis Intervention Response Team. They don't arrest him, not even when they find 55 gallons of gasoline stashed in the attic to keep out the imaginary people.
Now the Harris County Sheriff's Office may have a better solution. A new telepsychiatry pilot program debuting Tuesday will arm deputies with tablets equipped to dial in to psychiatrists for urgent video chats, offering professional help out in the field to people who don't necessarily need to go to jail or an emergency room.

Only a decade ago, the idea of using flying cameras to solve crimes seemed like something out of a made-for-TV science fiction film. Today, however, fiction has become a reality, and police agencies across the country increasingly are turning to these miniature aerial platforms to help in their work.

I've worked in the diversity and inclusion field for more than 25 years, yet I'm still astonished by the number of accusations and incidents that are now being reported on a near-daily basis. No industry seems to be immune, and some abusers target men as well as women. Responsible organizations are seeking solutions, but they're not sure what to do besides scheduling the old standby — sexual harassment training.

Almost all police officers likely would predict they would immediately observe a handgun if it were set on the dashboard during a traffic stop. However, a study conducted at the University of Illinois Police Training Institute involving 100 recruits (during the first four weeks of training) and 75 veteran officers found that many officers in both groups failed to notice a gun at any point during a simulated stop.
