Search continues for missing Hays County employee after truck is found, HCSO says

From Sept. 25: The Hays County Sheriff's Office is asking for the public's help in finding a 35-year-old Hays County Transportation employee that is missing and is suspected of being suicidal. Tyler J. Pendergrass was last seen leaving his workplace at 3:45 p.m. Thursday in a 2009 Chevrolet Colorado pickup with a Texas exempt plate reading "1043394," according to officials. His vehicle also has Hays County Transportation decals on the doors.

Travis County DA: Deputy justified in 2018 shooting

From Feb. 14: A Travis County deputy's decision to shoot at a man he believed was going to drive his truck into two other deputies was justified, according to the Travis County district attorney's office.
On Nov. 8, 2018, Deputy Luis Garcia shot toward but missed a driver trying to get away from officers in a stolen Ford F-150, authorities said.

Undercover deputies infiltrate Central Texas meth ring; 4 charged

From Feb. 28: Deputies with the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office infiltrated a criminal organization that trafficked methamphetamine between Hico and Stephenville, leading to the arrest of four alleged drug traffickers. Investigators with the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office became aware of the group of individuals trafficking methamphetamine in October 2019.
Undercover deputies were able to infiltrate the criminal network and "began making undercover purchases of methamphetamine," Hamilton County Sheriff Justin Caraway said.

Texas Rangers, Wood County Sheriff's Office investigating homicide that occurred near Quitman

From July 3: Authorities in Wood County have made an arrested in connection with a homicide and an attempted homicide that occurred near Quitman early Sunday morning, according to Sheriff Tom Castloo, who said the suspect is in custody after a six-hour search.The ongoing investigation into the incident is being led by the Texas Rangers. Law enforcement officers are still at the scene, Castloo said.

Texas on pace for record number of firearms background checks

From Aug. 7: Texas is on pace for a record-breaking year for firearm background checks, according to new data on U.S. firearms sales compiled by the FBI. National Instant Criminal Background Check System data, which the FBI uses to screen prospective gun buyers throughout the country, showed Texas has seen 1,364,051 background checks initiated through the system so far this year.

Woman, boyfriend arrested after viral video shows 3-year-old smoking marijuana

From Sept. 11: A woman and her boyfriend are facing child endangerment charges after a video of a toddler smoking marijuana circulated on social media. Bexar County sheriff's deputies arrested Larissa Contreras, 18, and Thomas Esquivel, 19, amid allegations that the pair urged Contreras' 3-year-old brother to smoke the drug, filmed the incident and shared it on Facebook.

From Jan. 17: For many illegal immigrants who have managed to cross the Mexican border into the United States, the most deadly and dangerous part of their journey still lies ahead of them.
In southeast Texas, there is only one road leading into the U.S. interior, U.S. Highway 281, which stretches more than 1,800 miles from Mexico to Canada. Though, just 80 miles from the U.S.-Mexico border is a Border Patrol checkpoint in Falfurrias, Texas. It's a last line of border defense that thousands and thousands of illegal immigrants risk — and lose — their lives trying to circumvent.
