Harris County sheriff deputy dies after COVID-19 battle; funeral set for Friday

A 14-year veteran Texas deputy died Saturday after contracting COVID-19, authorities said.The Harris County Sheriff's Office said deputy Juan Menchaca, 70, died "after a courageous battle against COVID-19." He is also the second employee in the department to die after contracting the virus.

Editor's note: A funeral service for Menchaca will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Hyacinth Catholic Church in Deer Park. Due to limited seating, the funeral will be closed to the public but you can watch it on the Harris County Sheriff's Office Facebook page.

Williamson County sheriff calls on Texas Rangers to assist with in-custody death investigation

Williamson County Sheriff Robert Chody on Monday called on Travis County District Attorney Margaret Moore to bring the Texas Rangers into the investigation of a man who died while in police custody in 2019.Last week, the Travis County DA called the Williamson County Sheriff's Office uncooperative in the investigation. Chody denies the claim.

6-year-old child shot, killed by his father in Matagorda County, sheriff's office says

The sheriff's office in Matagorda County said a man is facing a capital murder charge in connection with a shooting involving his young son.Lt. James Orr said deputies were dispatched to a shooting in the Frost Mobile Home Community near Bay City around 3 a.m. Tuesday. The victim was a 6-year-old boy and the boy's father, Jacob Graves, 30, was arrested and charged with capital murder.

Deputy injured in what Travis County Sheriff's Office believes was 'intentional' hit-and-run

A Travis County sheriff's deputy was injured last Friday in what the department believes was an "intentional act."According to a spokesperson, deputies were working a crash near FM 812 and Piland Triangle in Del Valle shortly before 11:30 p.m. when a man, who had ignored their commands, drove through the scene and struck a deputy.

Angelina County sheriff defends deputies after video surfaces showing arrest

Angelina County Sheriff Greg Sanchez responded to a video posted on Facebook showing deputies making an arrest.Security footage showed several law enforcement officers pushing a man to the ground, kicking him, and stepping on him.The video generated several comments and Sanchez was quick to respond.He says the video has been doctored and there’s a lot more to the story than what has been circulating on social media.

Fort Worth police are asking for prayers.It's taken 15-20 hours of surgeries just to stabilize Fort Worth police officer Matt Brazeal, and he's lucky to be alive. Saturday, just before noon, police say Brazeal was outside of his car trying to lay down stop sticks while officers chased Ronnie Jackson Jr. for driving away from a traffic stop in a stolen car. They say Jackson hit Brazeal head-on driving at highway speeds.

Texas state trooper secretly pays for elderly woman's tires when she couldn't

Mary Summers, 92, got to the Integrity Tires early after one of her tires picked up a nail. Mechanic Omar Oregueda was helping her.The tires were all cracked and unsafe. Video from inside the store shows the moment when Oregueda gives Summers the bad news: The new set of tires will cost more than $600. It was more than she could afford.Summers said she did not realize there was a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper sitting right behind her, waiting for his oil change to be finished.

The store video shows his discomfort as he silently deliberates his next move.Eventually, the trooper gets up, walks up to the counter, then leaves.Soon after that, Oregueda walks back to Summers and tells her all of the tires will be replaced.
