The Sheriffs' Association of Texas (SAT) announces that Chambers County Sheriff Brian Hawthorne will serve as the chair of its Legislative Committee for the next two legislative sessions. He was appointed by SAT President Sheriff Tom Maddox of Sabine County and President-elect Sheriff Kelly Rowe of Lubbock County. Hawthorne has worked as an advocate on behalf of the Sheriffs of Texas as a member of the SAT legislative committee for the last four sessions. He will continue to be a proponent on behalf of the Sheriffs of Texas as the chair of the committee.
Sheriff Hawthorne has extensive experience advocating on behalf of law enforcement professionals in the Texas Capitol. He has worked with the Executive branch, the 150 members of the State House, along with the Lieutenant Governor and the 31 members of the State Senate. Hawthorne also has a long history of working in a bi-partisan manner which is essential in bringing about progressive change.
Sheriff Hawthorne observed that it will be a difficult legislative session: "The COVID 19 pandemic, its impact on both the state and local budgets, the resulting shortfalls, and the necessary changes to the criminal justice system that we all recognize are needed, will make this the most challenging session that law enforcement has faced in decades," he said. "I, and the members of the Association, look forward to being a constructive part of the debate."
