Fading El Nino could extend Texas drought
The Dallas Morning News
The Aussies say El Niño — the hoped-for rainmaker for drought-plagued North Texas — has mostly fizzled out in the Pacific Ocean. That might be good news Down Under, but it’s not exactly what Texas water providers want to hear. And the U.S. Climate Prediction Center’s latest seasonal drought forecast shows much less promise for improvements in Texas than it did a couple of months ago. Areas that expected to see the five-year drought ease or even end are now looking at continued or possibly worsening drought in the coming months.

Capture rate — Take care in calculation
Auto Laundry News
Bob Roman, president of car wash consultancy BJR Enterprises, writes for Auto Laundry News, "I came across an article written by an equipment manufacturer that discussed what traffic count is needed to assure a profitable location. To paraphrase: Enough cars are needed to pass by every day so even if only a tiny percentage stopped for a wash that would be enough to pay the bills and have a significant profit left over. To determine how much traffic count is enough, the recommendation was to look at what car wash experts call the 'capture rate.' The author described capture rate as simply the percentage of vehicles that actually stop and get a wash."

Loveland Reporter-Herald
The owners of a brand-new, $4 million, computer-controlled tunnel car wash put out a "free wash" banner Jan. 22 and were swamped with takers — who in effect helped the business fine-tune its equipment before its official opening the next day. John Parker, one of four owners of Wash Worx at 3555 Mountain Lion Drive off East Eisenhower Boulevard, in Loveland, Colorado, said the business will continue to give away free top-of-the-line washes, worth $15 each, through the end of the month.

Texas water law serves as a model
Southwest Farm Press
Water issues are complicated, but that’s nothing new, said Tom Sell, co-founder and managing partner of Combest, Sell and Associates, LLC. Sell was keynote speaker at the recent Water College, sponsored by the Texas Alliance for Water Conservation in Lubbock, Texas. Sell told the audience gathered at the Bayer Museum of Agriculture that when he first started studying law he considered concentrating on water legislation issues. He soon discovered that "water law is complicated." He said issues surrounding water rights and regulations pose challenges to land owners, legislators and others with vested interests in water — which is everyone.
