Officials want car washes shutdown to conserve water
The Independent via Professional Carwashing & Detailing
Pleas to conserve water in Ashland, Ky., were recently overlooked by some, who used the sunny afternoon as a chance to wash their cars, The Independent reported. The water crisis began in the city this past week. Many citizens remain without water, or have weak water pressure. Ashland City Manager, Ben Bitter said, "We ask [wash customers], as a good community partner, to participate with us to conserve water."
The state of the minimum wage
President Barack Obama recently called on Congress, business owners and local representatives to take action to raise the wage floor across the country. He asked Congress to get on board with a Democratic proposal to raise the federal minimum to $10.10 per hour. But he also urged everyone from companies to small businesses, mayors, governors and state legislators not to wait for Congress.
Car wash mascot brings in customers
Community Impact Newspaper
Since the second location of Palms Car Wash opened April 27, owners David Beseda and Russel Moore have been branding their business with a new mascot and sponsoring community events in Northwest Austin. The business has sponsored events for Cypress Elementary School's Winter Wonderland Carnival and Anderson Mill Limited District's Fourth of July to become part of the community, said General Manager John Pinson. Palms Car Wash also designed a new mascot named Soft Foam Jerome to build the brand and inform customers about the company's soft-foam technology, which is gentler on vehicles.

Share your expertise with others
In an effort to enhance the overall content of SCWA Today, we'd like to include peer-written articles in future editions. As a member of SCWA, your knowledge and experience in the industry can be of great help to your fellow members. And we're hoping you'll share this expertise with your peers through well-written commentary. Because of the digital format, there's no word or graphical limit, and our group of talented editors can help with final edits. The only true stipulation we have is that you don't promote a specific product or service. It's not to say that you can't mention new technology or a new procedure associated with a specific company, but the article can't be an advertorial. If you're interested in participating, please contact Ronnie Richard to discuss logistics.
The car as you know it is dead
The tech world has been abuzz about the developments of the self-driving car, visions that are supplanting the earlier visions that would have filled the sky with flying cars. But beyond the hype and the promise, how will autonomous vehicles and their accompanying technologies really enter our lives?
What every small business needs to know this year
West Texas Tribune
For small businesses, adapting to the changing times is crucial. Periodically, it's important to review what's working and where there's room to transform. "The new year is a blank slate for small businesses, offering the opportunity to streamline everything from connecting with customers to cash flow management," says Tim Carroll, vice president of small business engagement at Deluxe Corporation. With this in mind, the following are resolutions for small businesses to succeed in 2014.
Car washes: The winter of their content
"This is the best January I've ever had," said Tak Chiv, surveying his Riverside, Calif., domain. Down in Temecula, Dave Lawrence sounded a lot like Tak Chiv. "January has been pretty good so far." Over in Redlands, Mike Adley, a meticulous record-keeper, put it this way: "2013 was 30 percent better than 2012. And this January is up 25 to 30 percent over January of last year." What kind of business is doing this kind of business? Think about it. What don't you do at the first hint of gloom and doom? What do you do (besides dash to the beach) when there's not a (rain) cloud in the sky? You get your car washed.
