EPA encourages water conservation with Fix a Leak Week

In conjunction with its WaterSense partnership program, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is sponsoring Fix a Leak Week March 16-22 to educate the public about the wastefulness of leaks, according to a press release. The average American family could waste more than 10,000 gallons of water because of leaks every year, noted the release. Leaks can increase a water bill by 10 percent.

GM recalls 64,000 Volts over carbon monoxide risk

General Motors is recalling about 64,000 Chevrolet Volts from the 2011-13 model years for a software update to limit how long the car can be left idling, a move to prevent carbon monoxide buildup when a driver forgets to shut off the vehicle. GM said in a statement to Automotive News that it is aware of two injuries related to the issue, both from carbon monoxide exposure.

Could El Niño quash tornadoes?

Scientists know that El Niño tends to subdue Atlantic hurricanes, and a new study says it could do the same to spring tornadoes across the South. "We can forecast how active the spring tornado season will be based on the state of El Niño or La Niña in December or even earlier," said John Allen, a Columbia University research scientist and lead author of the study.

Gas savings going to debt, groceries

Despite recent rises, gas prices are down 41 percent since their all-time high of $4.11 a gallon in July 2008. What are consumers doing with their gains? Paying off debt and buying groceries, according to a survey by Allstate and The National Journal. Or keeping it in their wallets. The price of a gallon of unleaded has fallen from its all-time high of $4.11 in July 2008 to $2.42 now, according to the American Automobile Association. On a 16-gallon fill-up, that's a savings of $27.04.

NADA reports vehicle sales increase

February light vehicle sales were up to 1.3 million, a 9.3 percent increase over January, according to the National Automobile Dealers Association Market Beat report. Sales increased 5.4 percent from February 2014, stated the report. Car sales were up three percent over last year, and light truck sales grew 14.8 percent. General Motors vehicles accounted for most of the automobiles sold, shared the report. Its sales were up 4.2 percent from February 2014.
