Businesses on alert as I-9 audits increase

The drastic increase in I-9 audits and record-breaking fines has prompted many employers to take additional steps to minimize their risk. Most employers understand the basics of the Immigration Reform and Control Act in regard to hiring illegal workers, but what they don't realize are the penalties for technical paperwork errors on I-9 forms. A large number of companies have been fined, not for hiring illegal workers, but instead for poor record-keeping and clerical errors.

Arkansas car wash sells for $2.4 million
Arkansas Business News
The sale of a Sherwood car wash tipped the scales at $2.4 million. Bailey's Tunnel Wash LLC, led by John Bailey, purchased the Boomerang Car Wash project at 7900 Highway 107. The seller is 1908 Investments LLC, led by Mark McCaslin. The deal was funded in connection with a 15-year loan of $14.1 million from Arvest Bank of Fayetteville.

Drought should lead more to car washes

Automakers recall 3.4 million vehicles over air bags
The New York Times
Honda, Toyota, Nissan and Mazda are recalling 3.4 million vehicles worldwide for air bag problems, the automakers announced in Japan. The recalls announced in Tokyo includes about 1.73 million Toyotas, 1.14 million Hondas, 480,000 Nissans and 45,000 Mazdas.

New plan would put water and roads funding in voters' hands

Water and roads are hot topics at the Texas legislature this session, as for the first time in several sessions, lawmakers make real efforts to fund new water and road projects for the growing state. While there seems to be a broad consensus that significant new funding is needed; as expected, it's in the particulars where differences are emerging. If a new Senate proposal ultimately passes, the large allocation of state dollars for water and roads would now be decided by the voters.

New owners take over Boomerang chain

The Boomerang Carwash chain, which includes 29 express car wash locations, is now owned by the new company, Boomerang Holding LLC, according to an emailed announced. The April 10 announcement stated the new company is headed by CEO James Burks. It is also overseen by a Board of Directors which includes five representatives. The company said it plans to improve operations through new training programs and through new technologies and features.

Immigration reform plan: Tighter border security pressed by lawmakers

Tighter border security must be one goal of U.S. immigration reform if the measure is to pass Congress, lawmakers who support the plan said on Sunday as they tried to build support for a proposal that should be outlined in coming days. The plan expected later this week envisions toughening border security to discourage new immigrants, while detailing clear steps that aspiring citizens can take if they are already in the country.

The Obama administration recently revealed plans to delay part of a program designed to make health insurance more affordable for small employers. If you're a small-business owner, what does this mean for you? For starters, the initiative is called Small Business Health Options Program, or SHOP. It's an insurance marketplace, or "exchange," for businesses with 100 or fewer full-time-equivalent employees. Each state will have one starting next year.
