Rick Perry calls for $1.6 billion of cuts in business taxes
The Dallas Morning News
Gov. Rick Perry recently called for business-tax cuts, saying they would preserve Texas' special status as "the most competitive place in the country" for entrepreneurs. It was not immediately clear, however, that Perry can build broad legislative support for his proposed overhaul of the business-franchise tax. Business and conservative groups hailed his plan, which would trim rates paid by all filers; deduct the first $1 million of gross receipts for most; and let companies that relocate in Texas deduct moving expenses.

Environmental group opposes grease trap bill
Valley Morning Star
An environmental group is again locking horns with a San Antonio-based company that planned to use the Rio Hondo sewer plant to treat liquid restaurant and car wash waste. Texas Campaign for the Environment opposes a bill filed by state Rep. Tracy King, D-Batesville, which would ease restrictions on operators that dispose grease trap waste, grit trap waste and septage on land, organization Program Director Andrew Dobbs said from Austin. "This bill would undermine a lot of the work to protect our health and environment," said Dobbs.

Advocates of immigration reform fight back against push for delay
The Washington Post
The Senate's leading supporters of overhauling the nation's immigration system recently sought to blunt a conservative effort to slow the pace of debate over their bill, saying the Boston Marathon bombings are a reason to move quickly to make changes. "What happened in Boston and international terrorism I think should urge us to act quicker, not slower," said Sen. Lindsey O. Graham, R-S.C., a member of a bipartisan group of eight senators who recently introduced a bill that would rewrite U.S. immigration laws, including for the estimated 11 million illegal immigrants.

Car wash of the future — build on assets and overcome challenges
Auto Laundry News
It is a known fact that new car washes are a propelling force for industry growth. Today, however, the climate is less conducive to sourcing and executing successful bank loans by family-owned businesses seeking growth and has hindered the execution of new projects. Moreover, financial experts are commenting today that a high level of debt does not seem to work for many retailers as it once did. To produce a better risk/reward profile, car wash investors should consider rationalizing the fragmented market. This can be accomplished with an integrated approach that allows for a wider range of opportunities.

Employers beware when conducting criminal background checks
By D. Albert Brannen
The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission recently issued enforcement guidance on arrest and conviction records in employment decisions. Employers need to revise their use of criminal background checks in light of this guidance.
