Employee compensation — What you need to know
Auto Laundry News
It has been a common practice in the detail business to pay employees "by the car." This means a certain price to detail the entire car, treating the employee like a subcontractor, paying no taxes, and providing no workmen's compensation insurance. The only reason operators have gotten away with these practices was because nobody was watching. However, as the detail business continues to take its place as a legitimate retail auto service business, and as employees "get smarter," detail business owners are putting themselves in jeopardy by continuing these practices.

Monsoon helps ease drought in Southwest states
Arizona Daily Sun
A generous monsoon has helped ease drought conditions in Colorado and the Southwest, but parts of the hard-hit southern Plains still have a long way to go. Between 2 and 6 inches of rain fell recently in storms across the plains of Colorado, Oklahoma, Kansas and Texas, which have been stuck in a drought for nearly four years, said the U.S. Drought Monitor released Aug. 7. However, the region will need extended rain and snowfall to make up for the 20 to 30 inches of moisture lost during that time, said U.S. Department of Agriculture meteorologist Brad Rippey, the report's author.

KSAZ-TV
The owner of a metro Phoenix car wash chain who admitted turning a blind eye to illegal hiring at his business is asking a judge to postpone his Oct. 20 sentencing date on a conspiracy conviction until at least April. National Weather Service backtracking some on El Nino forecast
The Washington Post
Many meteorologists thought El Nino was a done deal this year, or close to it. Turns out, like an obstinate dog, the would-be El Nino has balked. The National Weather Service Aug. 7 reduced the odds El Nino will develop by next winter from 80 percent to 65 percent. "We've gone from an estimated 1-in-5 chance that we won't have an El Nino to a nearly 1-in-3 chance," notes the NWS El Nino blog.
