After last winter's extended storms and heavy snowfall, business owners in many industries enter the cold months ahead with at least some sense of trepidation. Reportage following last winter's severe bouts of extreme weather showed various sectors of the economy were slowed by the ever-present piles of snow and sheets of ice. No matter the wash format, owners and operators should call on the old adage of hoping for the best while preparing for the worst. El Nino fails to materialize as of yet

Despite months of anticipation, a long-awaited El Nino atmospheric pattern has yet to return. The Climate Prediction Center announced early Nov. 6 El Nino conditions in the equatorial Pacific Ocean have not yet fully developed, though they are still likely this winter. Forecasters say conditions are "borderline" now, and predict a 58 percent chance the El Nino pattern will develop soon.

Why are fewer small business owners feeling successful?

Fewer small business owners perceive themselves as successful now than did at the start of the economic recovery, a Wells Fargo-Gallup survey of a representative sample of 601 small-business owners reveals. In 2009, 43 percent of small-business owners reported feeling "extremely" or "very successful as a small-business owner." By 2014 that fraction had eroded to 37 percent.
